First batch of students successfully complete Performing Engineering Operations NVQ

A key stage in the development of the local Peruvian students has been the successful completion of the City & Guilds 2251 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations, by 21 of the 48 trainees involved in this development project.

The driving force behind this element of the local students development involved the need to acquire a broad based vocational qualification. The Performing Engineering Operations NVQ provided that, as it is designed to have a wide application throughout the engineering sector, and in addition it provided a flexible approach to the environment in which the qualification could be assessed.

The NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations is a popular competence qualification, where the candidates must demonstrate competence and adequate underpinning knowledge in a minimum of five units, of which three are mandatory.

Whilst students have not been able to undergo assessment in a working environment due to the nature of the project, much has been gained by acquiring the basic engineering competencies whilst working in a sheltered environment. This has been due to an ongoing emphasis on safety critical work activity and the need to ensure flexibility of assessment opportunities to both maintain and enhance the provision of competent personnel within the industry.

Such an assessment method has allowed a minimum safe level of competence to be achieved and demonstrated by the candidates prior to being exposed to the hazards of the industrial environment, thus minimising the risk of injury to themselves and other employees.
