What is a confined space? It is an enclosed or partially enclosed space that had not been designed for continuous human occupancy. Confined spaces come in all shapes and sizes and contain a host of hidden dangers. Performing a safe confined space entrance is a task which needs extensive planning and preparation. If an entrance has not been properly planned then it could end in fatal circumstances. This e-learning course has over 70 screens which take a look at a host of topics that surround confined space awareness.

Unlike other e-learning providers who just supply a series of PowerPoint slides; our e-learning includes audio, video, text and graphics as we understand that everyone has their own unique learning style.
We use a variety of question types and provide feedback so you always know exactly how you are getting along.

Aim of the course
The aim of this e-learning tutorial is for the user to understand how to work safely in a confined space.
Objectives of the course
Following successful completion of this Confined Space Awareness e-learning course you will be able to: -
- Describe the characteristics of a confined space.
- Identify the three classification levels of a confined space.
- State the phases of the pre-job planning.
- Describe the steps of isolation for a confined space.
- State the different atmospheric conditions of a confined space.
- Describe the entry of the confined space precautions and ongoing monitoring.
- Identify the steps of confined space work completion.
Content of course
The topics which are covered in confined space awareness include:-
| Section 1: Confined Spaces - Do you know what a confined space is? Do you know the characteristics of a confined space? Think you could identify a confined space? Well this Confined Space Awareness e-learning course will look in depth at what actually makes a confined a confined space, this section is a great introduction to the concepts of confined spaces. |
Section 2: Entry Classifications - Not all confined spaces have the same entry procedures or safety watch. Understanding the different levels is essential; especially as each level has a different set of regulations and standards.
In this section you will learn about the aspects of the safety watch and entry procedures for each classification level.
| Section 3: Pre-job Planning - Before entering a confined space there are a number of issues and procedures which need to be considered and followed. This section looks at pre-job planning of entering a confined space, here we look at identification of a confined space, hazards/risk assessment, site specific procedures, rescue and emergency plan and pre-entry meeting. |
Section 4: Isolation - Confined spaces may contain substances or materials which may be harmful to workers, therefore isolation is needed.
In this Confined Space Awareness e-learning module we look at blanking/blinding preparation, Lockout/Tagout, electrical equipment, purging and ventilation.
Section 5: Testing Atmosphere Conditions - One of the biggest dangers of a confined space is its atmosphere, and the nature of confined spaces means that the atmosphere can change.
This section takes a look at a range of atmosphere and what could have caused them. We also have a look at concepts of gas testing and breathing apparatus.
Section 6: Entering a Confined Space - Do you know your rope signals? Do you know what is in the pre-entry assessment? Do you know the types of communication systems?
Well this section looks at these issues as well as ongoing monitoring of a confined space and a video demo of setting up a tripod.
Section 7: Completion - Learn what you have to do once the work in the confined space has been completed. This will help ensure safety of yourself and your work colleagues.
In this section we look at the different aspects of what needs to be done and some of the things you need to consider when the work in the confined space has been completed.
| Section 8: Summary - The summary section offers a recap of what you have learnt throughout the e-learning package. The breakdown of the material is especially useful when you review the course at a later date. This e-learning course is fully interactive including audio, video and graphics. We use a number of different question types to ensure you understand before you move on. |
